Dutch Poison Secret Compartment Ring with Garnet Filigrain 14K Gold

In 19th century Zeeland, jewellery was not decoration in the modern sense. It was part of the klederdracht, the regional dress that told you immediately who someone was, where they were from, and what their standing was in the community. Filigrain work in 14K gold was the mark of the Zeeuws goldsmith tradition, a technique of extraordinary patience, each piece built from wire rather than cast.

The compartment ring has a long history across Europe. A medieval bronze ring unearthed in Bulgaria by archaeologists carried a hidden compartment theorised to have held poison, used in an aristocratic feud at the Kaliakra fortress in the 14th century. By the 19th century, poison had become a particular anxiety across Europe. Arsenic was easy to obtain, difficult to detect, and cases of suspected poisoning filled the newspapers. The era was fascinated and frightened by what could be hidden in plain sight.

The compartment in this ring is small enough to hold a great many things. The garnet above it was the stone of enduring affection, given between people who intended to be remembered. What was kept beneath it is unknown.
