Victorian Dutch Navette Ring, Lab Ruby, Rosecut Diamond Halo, 14K Gold

The ruby has carried the same meaning for centuries: passion, protection, love that does not diminish. In Victorian jewellery it held a second, more private meaning. Stones were often arranged to spell words, their first letters forming a message only the wearer and the giver would understand. The ruby was R, the opening letter of REGARD. To give a ring with a ruby in it was, in that language, to say something.

The laboratory ruby in this ring tells its own story. Synthetic rubies emerged from French chemistry laboratories in the 1870s and 1880s, the result of decades of experiments attempting to recreate the stone's chemical composition from scratch. The Parisian chemist Edmond Frémy produced the first gem-quality synthetic rubies in 1877. By the late Victorian era they were finding their way into jewellery across Europe, indistinguishable in colour and chemistry from stones pulled from the ground in Burma. For the person who wore this ring, the distinction was likely irrelevant. The red was the same.
